Hitting the road and riding with Deliveroo for the first time can be both exciting, yet nerve-wracking.
We've put together some helpful suggestions to help make your first day on the road as easy as possible.
Get kitted up
Before you get ready for your first delivery, feel free to claim your free rider kit bundle. This includes:
- An insulated backpack or thermal delivery bag to help maintain the temperature of customer orders.
- A Deliveroo Rider jacket so customers can identify you as a Deliveroo Rider.
- A helmet to protect your head, if you're riding with a bike or an e-bike,
If your Rider application has been completed successfully, check the Rider Hub to learn how to claim your kit before heading for your first order.
Familiarise yourself with the Rider app
Spending some time exploring the Rider App before accepting your first order is a great way to get familiar with the features you’ll be using to complete each order.
It's useful to know where to find:
- Order offers
- Navigation
- Earnings
- Your delivery history
- Help and support
The more familiar you are with the app, the more confident you'll feel when your first order comes through.
Choose a time you feel comfortable riding
Some Riders want to hit the road straight away and ride during the busiest periods to maximise their earnings potential - weekend evenings are a great time for this, but it’s also okay if you want to take things slowly and at your own pace. Opting to get started during quieter periods, such as weekday lunchtimes gives you a chance to get used to collecting orders, finding customers, and build your confidence as a Rider.
Be prepared for order collections
Sometimes there may be a short wait to collect an order. A friendly approach creates a positive experience for everyone.
While you're waiting:
- Check the order number and have it handy in case you’re asked to show it while collecting the order.
- Be polite to members of staff – they’re working as quickly as they can and a bit of kindness goes a long way.
- Keep your thermal bag ready so you can hit the road as soon as the order has been handed to you.
Only accept orders you feel comfortable completing
The great thing about riding with Deliveroo is that you're always free to decide which orders you accept.
Before accepting an order, it’s a good idea to check you're happy to complete the delivery. If an order isn't right for you, simply reject it promptly so another rider can collect it quickly.
Stay safe while riding
Your safety always comes first when riding. Please remember to follow all local laws, plus adhere to speed limits and the highway code. Find out more about staying safe on the road here.
Although you don’t have to, choosing to wear Rider kit items can also help customers identify you as a Rider. This can help to ensure smooth and efficient deliveries. Rider jackets are reflective, helping you stay visible to road users while completing deliveries.
It can be tempting to stay on the road for long periods, but pacing yourself and staying hydrated can help you stay alert and reduce the impact of fatigue. Remember, you can choose when you go online and if you want to accept orders.
Choose how you hear from Deliveroo
After your rider application is accepted, we'll ask you if you want to hear from Deliveroo on WhatsApp.
From handy tips to important rider updates and the occasional offer, it’s an easy way to stay in the know while you’re on the road.
The great thing is we’ll only message you if you choose to opt in, and you can opt out at any time.
Welcome to the road
No two orders are the same. Starting something new can feel like a big step, but as you complete more orders your confidence will grow.
Every delivery helps you gain experience so take your time, ride safely and remember that every Rider started exactly where you are.
