New ID scan process for some age-restricted orders

We’re introducing a new age-check process for some orders containing age-restricted products, such as alcohol, tobacco and vapes. 

For these orders, you’ll need to follow a Check 25 + ID scan.

This means: 

  • If the customer looks over 25, you can continue with the delivery
  • If the customer looks under 25, instead of checking their ID and entering their date of birth manually, you’ll now need to scan their ID using your Rider app 

The Rider app will always tell you which age check to follow before you accept the order, and guide you through the steps at the doorstep.

How Check 25 + ID scan works

  1. Check whether the customer looks over or under 25
  2. If they look over 25, follow the app guidance and continue the delivery
  3. If they look under 25, ask for ID
  4. Check that the ID is valid
  5. Check that the ID belongs to the customer in front of you
  6. Scan the ID in the Rider app
  7. Follow the instructions in the app to complete the delivery

The scan checks:

  • The customer’s date of birth
  • Whether the ID is expired

You still need to visually check that the ID belongs to the customer, and that it is a valid form of ID 

Which orders does this apply to?

This process only applies to some orders with age-restricted products.

For most other age-restricted orders, the process stays the same:

  • Check every customer’s ID
  • Manually enter their date of birth in the app

The Rider app will always show you which process to follow for each order.

Customer privacy

If a customer asks why their ID is being scanned, you can reassure them that:

  • the scan is only used to verify their age and whether the ID is expired
  • the app does not store a photo of their ID
  • no image is saved on your device

Do not deliver age-restricted items if:

  • the customer cannot provide valid ID
  • the customer refuses to show ID
  • the ID appears invalid
  • the customer is under 18
  • the customer appears drunk
